Your data is safe with us

Whatever industry you work in, it’s likely you’ve heard the term ‘GDPR’ mentioned in meetings or emails over the last few months. It’s also quite likely that – unless you’re responsible for data protection in your firm – you’re wondering just what GDPR actually means.

If this is the case, don’t worry, because you’re definitely not alone. A survey this month has shown that many companies are rushing to hire Data Protection Officers to ensure they’re compliant with the new rules once they come into effect on 25th May 2018. Over 1,000 DPO jobs have been listed since January, indicating a considerable skills shortage in this area.

Smaller businesses who don’t have the luxury of being able to appoint a dedicated employee must research the legislation themselves to ensure compliance in time for the deadline.

Happily, here at Perrys we have planned ahead and we’re set to be fully compliant with GDPR rules, ensuring utmost security for your accounts and any related information we hold about you.

GDPR explained
So, what exactly is GDPR? It stands for General Data Protection Regulation – an EU measure that sets out stricter rules for hosting and processing personal data. The aim is to give individuals greater control over the information that companies and organisations hold about them.

The implications for business are wide-ranging. Put simply, companies must establish explicit consent from consumers before collecting and storing their data. Failure to comply with GDPR will result in fines of up to 4% of global annual turnover.

As reputable accountants, we already follow the principles of the current Data Protection Act (DPA), and we’ve always placed confidentiality and discretion at the heart of our business. The fact we are fully compliant with the DPA means that we are well placed to step up to the new standards set by GDPR. This involves a full data audit, including a careful examination of how data is shared between departments. We’re also establishing a process whereby clients are given positive ‘opt in’ boxes with regards to data sharing, rather than a box to opt out.
