Meet Declan McCusker – partner at our Mayfair branch

Declan
Our reputation as an exceptional firm of chartered accountants rests on the diligence and professionalism of our staff. We asked Declan McCusker, head of our London Mayfair branch, to answer a few questions about his work – and life outside the office.

How long have you worked at Perrys?

I joined the firm in 2005 from another London practice where I qualified in 1991. So I now have over 25 years’ experience as an accountant, which really doesn’t seem possible because the years have flown by!

What services do you provide from your Mayfair office?

My own specialism is audit compliance, but I also advise on a whole range of matters including remuneration planning, capital gains tax and all aspects of tax planning.

Is there a ‘typical’ Perrys client, or do you work with many different kinds of businesses and individuals?

The West End is a wonderfully diverse and vibrant part of London, and our client base reflects this. Clients range from small local sub-contractors to global businesses, operating in various sectors including retail, hospitality and catering, property, and legal.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Although working with numbers is something I’ve always enjoyed, I actually find the people element of the job the most satisfying. It’s so interesting to get to know a company and the team behind it, and to find out what makes the business tick so that you can help it to thrive. I’ve been working with some clients for over a decade, and I like to think these long-term relationships are testament to the professional and friendly service we provide here at Perrys.

What’s the best thing about working in central London?

Mayfair is a lively social area with no end of bars and restaurants. The shops are hard to beat too, and Green Park is just a few minutes’ walk away – great for a breath of fresh (ish) air at lunchtime!

And the worst?

That has to be the travel. I commute from Surrey, and although it’s only a 30 mile journey it can take up to 2 hours each way when the trains are disrupted. But it’s my choice to work in central London and it still feels like a privilege, so I try not to complain too much!

What are your interests outside of work?

My family and sports. I’m married with two sons and we are all Manchester City fans so it’s been a great season. We go to watch them regularly. I used to play and coach basketball in the National Basketball League, but now I’ve retired from that I play in a dads’ football team close to home. I am also a keen cyclist. Family life is always busy, with the boys involved in football, rugby, cricket, tennis and swimming. There’s never a dull moment at home or at work!
