Kent Life Food and Drink Awards 2019

Kent Life Food and Drink Awards 2019

Launched in 2013, the Kent Life Food and Drink Awards have consistently championed the cream of the country’s food and drink industry, showcasing local producers and suppliers, small farming businesses, chefs, restaurants, pubs and hotels.

We’ve been a proud sponsor since 2014, and this year we were delighted to be sponsoring the Independent Café/Tea Room of the Year category, (pic courtesy of Kent Life Twitter) as well as taking on the difficult job of judging the Butcher of the Year category.

We had a wonderful time celebrating with all the finalists at the awards dinner, which took place on 28th November.

The worthy winner of the Independent Café award was Cliffs of Margate, which describes itself as a ‘café, record shop, yoga studio, hair salon and coffee roastery’ and is obviously a popular place to meet and eat for fresh coffee, delicious cake and light meals, all organic and locally sourced wherever possible.

Perrys consultant Alex Skinner was delighted to present the award, and he also had the difficult job of judging the Butcher of the Year category, which went to S W Doughty in Doddington.

Alex said:

“S W Doughty edged it for me – it was the little details that made this 100-year-old family-owned butcher stand out from the others. What really hit me was the sheer volume of customers coming in and out of this little shop on my visit, from all over the Kent region. Don’t let size fool you however as this place really packs a punch!

I really liked the staff who were attentive and seemed to know many of the customers as they came through the door, a testament to the confidence in the quality S W Doughty has to offer. They were happy to give great advice on cuts of meat for certain dishes and seasoning.

The high quality meat on offer is also incredibly impressive and is all sourced from local farms nearby such as Kingsdown for the Beef and Lamb.  Geese were freely roaming outside in the gardens and other free range poultry such as chickens are sourced locally in Upchurch.”

Alex added:

“Congratulations to all the winners. Kent is truly a foodie’s paradise!”
